Umpires Questions & Answers

1) What are the rules on 'causing contact'? I would really like some clarity on what you can and cannot do when marking your opponent. Many thanks! Fiona

Please refer to rule 17.2 [i], [ii], - 'In an effort to attack or defend or to play the ball, a player SHALL NOT: [i] move into the path of an opponent who is committed to a particular landing space, [ii] position so closely that the player is unable to move without contacting'. You can mark your opponent close - but Are you causing the contact? It's up to the umpire to see is the intent there OR are they contesting (50/50). If this is happening what is the point in stopping the game for contact. It also depends on the level of the game being umpired.
