Umpires Questions & Answers

1) Test question to umpire

ok

2) What are the rules on 'causing contact'? I would really like some clarity on what you can and cannot do when marking your opponent. Many thanks! Fiona

Please refer to rule 17.2 [i], [ii], - 'In an effort to attack or defend or to play the ball, a player SHALL NOT: [i] move into the path of an opponent who is committed to a particular landing space, [ii] position so closely that the player is unable to move without contacting'. You can mark your opponent close - but Are you causing the contact? It's up to the umpire to see is the intent there OR are they contesting (50/50). If this is happening what is the point in stopping the game for contact. It also depends on the level of the game being umpired.

3) what does 'penalty not set' mean?

This is when a player does not take the penailty where the umpire stated and indicated, the umpire awards a freepass to the oposition and states pently not set. Joan Smith - Umpiring Sec

4) We are a new team starting the season with a tournament on 3rd Feb. We need an umpire. Is there a list of available people we can contact?

Do you mean starting in the Birmingham League if so go to the Umpiring Secretary - Pat Okuno

5) When the Umpire pulls me up for three feet as G/D in the goal third, as the G/A is about to shoot! Then she takes the shot! Then my G/K defends and she is also too close! Do we both stand by herside, or just my G/K as i aready waited for G/A to take her shot? Is that right fo me to get peanalised twice then?

1st the umpire blew for the GD so there should have been a penalty in the goal third OR did the umpire play the advantage because the GA was shooting? in this case the GK only should have been penalised.

6) Why can umpires, umpire there own teams as most of the time it is very bias? Many Thanks Hughie.

Not even going there

7) Hello. Please can you clarify the procedure for injuries on court i.e. time out, player swap etc. Thank you.

lst Injury you are allowed the 2mins, then thereafter if there is another injury in the same quarter by the same team/then you have 30 secs to do so. Page 15 rule book, (7.iii & 7.iv)

8) What are the current rules about substitution in the Birmingham Netball League?

Birmingham League play to England Netball Rules, so l advise you to look in the official rule book - Page 14

9) When a penatly pass is awarded to the attacking team in the "D" if say the GS has the ball when the penatly is set and the GS then places the ball on the floor to allow the GA to take the penalty is this classed as a pass? I have been told conflicting information that by them placing the ball on the floor it is a pass and that say the defence can then pick the ball up and carry on. However we have been told that this is not the fact by other umpires and we are now confused as to which is correct.

NO it is not classed as a pass. A penalty pass/shot as been awarded to the team so this must be allowed to take place.
